Grey and Pink

Man, I almost let the post slide tonight because I've been laid up all day with a horrible fever and cough.  But, I didn't want to give in, so here we are!  Apparently, this week is going to be an Enchanted focused week!  Tonight, we're going to take a look at a lovely grey and pink combo using Enchanted Once Upon a Cloud as accents with Lynnderella Pink Sapphire Stilettos.

Once Upon a Cloud is a lovely medium grey linear holographic with loads of pink shimmers.  This was a polish she surprise restocked, so I was very fortunate to grab it when it was listed on her shop.  Application for OUAC is pretty amazing just like with almost all of the EP's I own.  It applied easily without pooling or streaking.  You could probably wear it with just one coat, but I chose to wear it in two for my photos.

Pink Sapphire Stilettos is a pink jelly based polish packed with hot pink metallic and holographic glitters.  Even though it's a glitter, application was relatively easy, and I only needed to lightly dab to get the glitters to spread evenly.  Unlike many Lynnderella glitters, PSS is actually fully opaque on its own in two coats!  I didn't need undies, so I didn't use any this go around.  I did use an extra coat of topcoat to tame the glitters a bit and give them a glossy look.

Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer 1st Anniversary! One Gray-t Year!

It's been almost exactly a year since I opened up shop over at Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquers.  To commemorate the occasion, I've created a limited edition made just for this restock on Sunday.  The brilliant name was given to me by Jessica of Polished 10, and I think it's perfect!  Let's take a look see.  This post will be picture heavy, so prepare yourselves!

One Gray-t Year is a matte grey polish with rainbow micro-flakies.  It dries to a satin finish instead of a straight matte, but it's still really nice.

This shows three coats without topcoat.  It's a bit shiny because I got some cuticle oil on my nails a bit, but it's definitely more of a satin finish than glossy.

It's a tad on the thicker side, but not difficult to work with.  Application is easy without any flooding or pooling.  Even though it's a matte, there's no issue with balding or clumping, either.

Dry time was a bit on the long side when worn without a quick dry topcoat, so be prepared for that if you're in a hurry.  With topcoat, however, dry time is average.  The photos below show it with one coat of Rush quick dry topcoat.

Comparison Thursday: Guest Blogger Style - Grey with Red Glitters

Hi, Wishes of a Blue-Eyed Girl readers! I'm Sara from Born For A Storm. I'm stepping in for today with a quick comparison post for Julie! (Disclaimer: both of these polishes were purchased by me, because I feel the need to own every grey thing in the world.) Today we're going to be looking at grey jellies full of red glitter!

 

Hare - Swanky Soiree. This polish was a Holiday 2012 limited edition from the brand. Isn't it beautiful? I missed it when it came out but was finally able to track it down via a blog sale. Lucky! It's a grey jelly with hex and square shaped red glitters. There's also a few grey glitters in it and a subtle silver shimmer. It's gorgeous, but you can't get it anymore, which leads me to...

 

Happy Revolution - Flip Flip Flipadelphia. This polish is so similar that it's silly to own both. (Unless you are me, who needs to own all the grey.) It's a grey jelly, with red, silver, and grey glitters. The main difference is that there is a lot less red and silver shimmer in this polish than in the Hare, but I still think it's similar enough to be an adequate substitute! This polish was an It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia-inspired collaboration between Happy Hands and Polish Revolution and is currently available in both of their shops. (My lighting was a little different for this photo and I apologize. I promise they are both very, very similar.) Both of these polishes are shown with basecoat, 2-3 coats of polish, and topcoat. They both got a little gloopy as I added coats, as glitters tend to do. I wasn't surprised by this, and I don't think that it's necessarily a flaw in the polish; it's just something that happens. I think, in the future, when I'm wearing them instead of just doing swatches, I would put on an opaque grey cream, and then just one or two coats of polish. I hate when glitters get really thick, so using a base polish is something that I really like to do. Both of these dry a bit gritty, so a thick coat of topcoat would be a good idea. Lynnderella Mysterious Ways

Ok, so let's take a look at Lynnderella Mysterious Ways over Gelish Cashmere Kind of Girl.

Color: Sheer creamy grey base with silver metallic and holo and white glitters.

Finish: Glitter Crème – glitter in a crème base.

Bottle / Brush: Rectangle bottle – ribbed cap that is a little hard on the hands to open if you have sensitive skin.  The wand is the standard length, but the brush is a little too thin to pick up large / shaped glitter without fishing.  The brush's width is also an issue for spreading.  It doesn't fan out and pretty much requires you to dab polishes that are densely packed with glitter.

Opacity: Low – it requires several coats for opacity, but you'll never really get rid of visible nail line.  Here, however, I wore it as one coat over undies.

Glitter Application: Medium – requires the dab method, but spreads evenly.

Consistency: Medium – applies easily and doesn’t flood the cuticles.

Overall Ease of Application: Easy – applies well without pooling, dragging, streaking, or balding.  Spreads evenly and smoothly.

Stampability: Not designed for stamping.

Dry Time: Medium – dry to the touch with minimal smudging in 3-8 minutes.

Overall Thoughts:  This is is a bit of a fail for me.  Not because of the application of the polish, but the color!  I wanted to love dove greys, but they just don't look that great with my pinkie-red skin tone.  Also, I'm not a huge fan of those giant silver hexes.  Application was easy without too much difficulty in getting the glitters out of the bottle.  I wore this over dove grey Gelish Cashmere Kind of Girl, which also didn't look that great on me.  It's very disappointing, but since I"m a Lynn hoarder, this baby is hanging out in my stash still.  I'm thinking of trying it over another color.  Any suggestions?

Comparison Thursday: Grey Glitters

Today's been a rough day.  I woke up on the wrong side of the bed and have been irritable all day.  Don't you hate that?  Add on top of that, I've been singing songs from Les Mis for four days.  FOUR DAYS.  It's my all time favorite musical and has been since I was 11, but there's only so much a person can take.  I can't get them out of my head.  So, in an effort to make myself giggle a little, I decided to watch something pretty damn spectacular.  Go ahead.  Click play.  I'll wait. (Please bear with the introduction he does because the video is totally worth it - especially if you're a console video game nerd like myself.)

HAH!  Fantastic.  It never ceases to make me smile and put me in a better mood.  Plus, I'm now enjoying my first beer since Christmas, Sweet Water Dank Tank the Gimp.  I've been trying to cut back on my alcohol just to get healthier (I'm gluten intolerant after all), but it's sooooo hard.  I love that sweet manna from heaven.  I'm also watching some Arrested Development and Eureka while the hubs snoozes on the couch with the kitties.  My night is definitely going much better than my day!

Now that that's out of the way, let's take a look at today's Comparison Thursday: grey glitters.  What's your preference for spelling the word grey?  Grey or gray?  I don't know why, but I've always spelled it grey.  If that drives you crazy, I apologize and give you permission to flame me in the comments, lol.  As you may have noticed, I've changed up the way I review polishes on the blog.  For Comparison Thursdays, I won't be doing full blown reviews of these polishes like I do in normal review posts.  Instead, I'll focus solely on comparing each of the relevant polishes instead of going into too much detail.  Then, I'll do a detailed review of each polish at a later date.  How does that sound?

Anyway, back on topic.  We're going to take a look at four of the grey glitters I have in my stash: Pahlish Sitting in a Tin Can, Dollish Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto, Pahlish Sullen Girl, and Dollish the Many Shades of Mr. Grey.

Sitting in a Tin Can

Sitting in a Tin Can is a charcoal grey jelly with fine black glitters and multi-sized and -shaped silver holographic glitters.  SiaTC applied really smoothly without much work, but the smell was pretty off-putting - almost like I was at my grandmother's house playing in her perfume.  I noticed this with Sullen Girl, as well, so I'm not really sure what base Shannon is using or if it's something else that she adds to her polish to make it so...  pungent.  The glitters in SiaTC have sunk, but they shake up easily.  Although, they were a little more difficult to dig out of the bottle than the other three polishes.  This is two coats over undies (Gelish Cashmere Kind of Gal).  Other than the fact that the glitters took a little effort to spread and the smell was a bit too strong for my taste, I really do like this polish.  It's probably my favorite of the four.

Domo Arigato(u) Mr. Roboto

I'm anal.  It's Arigatou, Ms. Dolly.  Not Arigato.  Anyway.  Roboto is a grey jelly with a lighter base than SiaTC.  It includes silver holo hexes in two sizes, iridescent glitters, and black hexes in two sizes.  Roboto suspends well, mixed easily, spread well, and only required a little dab and then a swipe on the second coat for full opacity.  It's not as dark as SiaTC and is a little more blue-toned than Sullen Girl.  The lack of smell and ease application puts this in my second favorite slot.

Sullen Girl

Sullen Girl is a bit lighter grey jelly than SiaTC and a little more brown-leaning than Roboto.  Again, this little baby smelled pretty bad.  It lasted on my hands for a whole day even with a shower, if that tells you anything.  Plus, it clumped.  A lot.  Like, a whole lot.  It was a massive pain to apply, which was completely opposite of SiaTC that applied soooo easily.  This is four coats to get an even and non-streaky end product.  The iridescent glitters make this one unique in the bunch.  This was easily my least favorite.  I'm sure that you can add some thinner and fix the thickness right up, but I also wasn't really sold on the color combination.  It'll be making its way to my sales page in the next few days.

The Many Shades of Mr. Grey

Grey is the outlier of the group.  It's a clear base with gun metal, silver, and black glitters without any holo goodness.  It spread so easily and looked great over the undies I chose (still Gelish Cashmere Kind of Gal), which I had been battling with for the whole week trying to determine whether I like it or not.  I'm actually really digging it with Grey on top.  I knew it wasn't really in the same family as the other three, but I wanted to toss it in just in case anyone was curious.  It's still really pretty, and I love it for different reasons than I love SiaTC and Roboto.

Depending on what you're looking for in a grey polish, you could probably get away with only having one.  If you want iridescent, go with Sullen Girl.  If you want holo-y goodness, you can't go wrong with either SiaTC or Roboto.  You'll just need to determine what base jelly color you like best when making your choice.  Here's my order of preference, in case you're curious: SiaTC > Roboto > Sullen Girl.  Grey falls in a different spectrum.
